What are Lumineers?
Similar to dental Veneers, Lumineers are a thinner alternative. Lumineers are essentially porcelain covers for patients who would like to cosmetically enhance their teeth. They will go over the patient’s teeth to fix a number of problems, including teeth that are crooked, permanently stained, and abnormally shaped, among others. Overall, Lumineers are a thin solution for patients who are looking to improve their smile. Additionally, they are about as thin as contact lenses. Like veneers, lumineers are for people that are looking for cosmetic enhancements to their teeth, because of this they are associated with cosmetic dentistry.
Lumineers vs. Veneers
Though Lumineers and Veneers are very similar in concept, they have a few fundamental differences. First, veneers are much more invasive than Lumineers. For example, when teeth are prepared for veneers, there is extensive drilling on the teeth to score them for placement of the porcelain. Additionally, Lumineers are much thinner than veneers; Lumineers are as thin as contact lenses along the tooth, resulting in a more natural look and feel to the teeth after treatment. Minimal enamel is lost with Lumineers, unlike veneers, and during preparation no anesthesia is used with Lumineers. Overall, Lumineers are a better option for patients who are looking to improve their smile with a minimally invasive procedure. However, if a patient needs a more sturdy alternative, veneers are a great solution to the same cosmetic concerns that Lumineers help solve. It is important to discuss this with your Doctor to find the solution that will work best for you.
When Lumineers are Necessary
Lumineers are a restorative solution for a number of cosmetic complaints that patients have with their teeth. First, Lumineers can provide an immediate solution for patients who have slightly crooked teeth and would like them straightened, without braces. Additionally, they can help patients who have teeth that are irregularly shaped or smaller than normal. Patients who have permanently stained or discolored teeth may also get Lumineers to refresh their smile.
Process for Getting Lumineers
Typically, completing your Lumineers treatment will take just two visits into the office. At the first visit, the Doctor will take impressions of your upper and lower teeth, which are then sent to a dental lab for the Lumineers to be made. It will usually take about three weeks for the finished Lumineers to be returned to the office, at which point the patient can finish the treatment.
At the second visit, the Doctor will place the Lumineers. Before attaching them to the teeth, the Doctor will check first to ensure the Lumineers will fit properly and look good in the patient’s mouth. After verifying this, the dentist will make slight etches into the teeth to prepare them for placement of the Lumineers, and finally will bond them to the teeth.
Benefits of Lumineers
Lumineers have many benefits to help patients achieve the smile they have always wanted. As previously mentioned, Lumineers are minimally invasive, unlike other procedures like traditional veneers and crowns. In addition, Lumineers provide a one-stop solution to a number of cosmetic dental complaints, such as dull or permanently stained teeth, chipped teeth, irregularly shaped teeth, and gaps between teeth. Lumineers can also even renew the look of previous dental work, and they can be placed over crowns and bridges. Finally, Lumineers require no shots and are a great option for patients with sensitive teeth.
Caring for Lumineers
With proper care, patients can make their Lumineers last up to 20 years. Since the restorations are made to be durable and fit specifically to each patient’s teeth, patients do not need to worry about what they eat and drink. After receiving Lumineers, patients should continue to brush and floss regularly, and attend their regular dental cleanings twice a year. The restorations are reversible since there is no significant grinding of the teeth. So although Lumineers are meant to last for decades, patients may remove them if they choose.
Alternatives to Lumineers
If Lumineers do not seem like the best option for you, Hammond Dental offers many other solutions to the cosmetic treatment you may seek. Depending on what a patient is looking to accomplish with cosmetic dentistry, there are options that treat a single complaint, while there are others that are versatile like Lumineers.
The closest option to Lumineers, veneers are very similar in function and in appearance to Lumineers. The primary difference between the two is that traditional veneers require more extensive preparation for the placement of the restoration. Veneers, however are more sturdy than Lumineers and are less prone to fracturing. Overall, veneers are a great cosmetic solution to teeth that are chipped, permanently stained, crooked, have gaps, and are abnormally shaped.
Dental crowns, also known as “caps,” are tooth shaped inlays that restore the shape, size, and strength of the natural tooth. The name, “crown,” refers to the visible portion of a tooth. Crowns are designed to cover the entire visible portion of a restored tooth all the way down to the gum line. They are used to resolve a number of dental issues, and are commonly used for both restorative dentistry and cosmetic dentistry. Like veneers, dental crowns are less reversible and a more extensive procedure than Lumineers. They are a good option for patients with weakened teeth or for patients who require other restorative work.
New Smile Clear Aligners
For patients whose primary concern is having crooked teeth, New Smile Clear Aligners are a great option. Much cheaper than Invisilign, these aligners will gradually straighten the patient’s teeth over the course of a few months, using different, specially designed clear trays. Patients can seamlessly transform their smile, without the need for any wires. Though unlike Lumineers, the New Smile Clear Aligners are more time consuming to fully complete the treatment.
If a patient is simply looking to achieve a brighter, whiter smile, our take-home whitening kit is a great option. Unlike the take-home kit that we offer, in-house whitening is simply not as effective as the gel. Patients can get the whitening kit for only $199, which will include the whitening gel, trays, and the appointment for the tray fittings at our office.
WE WORK WITH MOST INSURANCES
The pricing for Lumineers will vary depending on the patient’s specific needs and preferences. Typically an exam will be necessary for the Doctor to identify the best course of action for each patient. Patients should also check with their insurance provider as most insurance companies will often cover a portion of the visit. However, since Lumineers are a cosmetic procedure, there is a chance insurance will not cover the cost of them, but only the comprehensive exam.
