Inlays and Onlays
Dental inlays and onlays can be used to repair mild to moderate tooth damage and decay in cases when a filling isn’t a enough, but a full crown is not necessary. They are also an excellent option for replacing old fillings. In either case, the dentist is able to conserve much of your existing tooth structure.
An inlay fits within the the points or cusps of the tooth and an onlay is more extensive, reaching over at least one cusp or point of the tooth. Inlays and onlays are made of durable materials and can last up to 30 years, prolonging the life of your tooth and preventing the need for future dental work. Teeth treated with this procedure are up to 75 percent stronger than with traditional fillings.
During treatment, typically with local anesthesia, any existing fillings or decay will be removed and an impression will be taken of your tooth. This mold will be sent to a dental laboratory where your custom inlay or onlay will be made out of porcelain or composite resin. You will then be fitted with a temporary restoration to protect your tooth. At your next appointment, your temporary will be removed and you will be fitted with your new inlay or onlay. It will be bonded and polished for a perfect fit and look.
