What is a Dental Emergency?
Dental emergencies appear in many different forms. We think it is important to educate our patients on what is considered a dental emergency, and what can wait. Dental emergencies do not have one specific set of criteria, but it is generally some kind of trauma or infection that requires immediate attention. Some examples of dental emergencies include any instance in which the nerve or root of the tooth is exposed. Additionally, an abscess is another case that would require immediate attention from the Doctor. If patients have any question if something is a dental emergency or not, they should Contact Us to be certain.
How Do I Know If I Have A Dental Emergency?
Patients oftentimes confuse what is considered a dental emergency with normal pain that can wait for treatment, and understandably so. This line can be difficult to find. Essentially, dental emergencies are anything that requires immediate medical attention. For example, this often presents with teeth that have exposed roots, which are susceptible to infection. Additionally, severe trauma to teeth requires immediate attention, as a tooth left untreated may end up needing to be removed. Finally, teeth that have been knocked loose or come completely out of the socket will also need immediate attention. Overall, tooth pain caused by food sensitivity or loose crowns are not dental emergencies, but we do still recommend seeking treatment sooner rather than later
How do Emergency Appointments work?
Unfortunately, emergencies are a fact of life, which is why Hammond Dental will do everything possible to get our patients out of pain. Since the majority of our patients book their appointment times in advance, it is best to call ahead once you have decided to see the dentist. As with any emergency, we will do our best to see patients the same day they call. Though we leave space in the schedule in case of emergency patients, we do have a limited number of spots. We urge patients to call ahead before coming in for treatment so that we can give you the best care possible.
What To Do Until You’re Able To See A Dentist
If for any reason patients cannot make it in to see the dentist, there are a few things they can do to alleviate any pain or discomfort before seeing someone. For example, infections in the mouth can be cared for with over-the-counter anti-inflammatory pain medicine and rinsing the mouth with ½ tsp of saltwater in 8 oz of warm water. Additionally, if the restoration has fallen out, it can be reattached to protect the tooth underneath with a gentle adhesive, such as denture paste. Patients can always call us if they have any questions about what to do.

What Treatment Can Be Done Same Day?
At Hammond Dental, we want to help our patients get out of pain and discomfort from their dental emergency as soon as possible. Often times, same-day treatment is very possible, and we will always offer that option if available. Same-day treatment options include but are not limited to: teeth extractions, root canal therapy, dental crowns and bridges, and dental fillings. We are also able to prescribe antibiotics the same day to patients who are at risk or currently suffering from a tooth infection. The type and severity of injury or infection will determine the treatment that can be done the same day, but we will always do everything we can to alleviate the patient.
For new patients with insurance, we will likely not have enough time before the visit to verify insurance benefits. If that is the case, we ask that the patient pays for the entire visit upfront since we will not be able to charge based on what the insurance company will cover. The insurance company will subsequently then reimburse the patient directly. Before completing any treatment, we will let the patient know the exact cost.
Tooth Extraction
At Hammond Dental, our Doctors are excellent at prioritizing our patient’s comfort. Consequently, our Doctors will do their best to extract teeth the same day if that is the necessary treatment to relieve patient pain or discomfort. The Doctor will begin treatment by first assessing the patient’s mouth to ensure an extraction is the best course of action. Then, the Doctor will apply a local anesthetic so the extraction will not be felt. Depending on if it is a simple or surgical extraction, the entire process will take anywhere from 60-90 minutes. Although the extraction itself is a fairly quick process, the healing time can take up to a few days. To learn more about extractions, patients can visit our Dental Extractions page.

Tooth Filling
Sometimes patients require same-day fillings to stop the progression of infection or to replace a previous filling that has come out. A dental filling is a procedure used to repair teeth affected by decay and to avoid further damage to the affected tooth. The dental filling procedure involves the removal of the decayed tooth tissues, cleaning of the tooth surface, and then filling the cavity with a special material. The filling material will close off areas where germs can enter, and helps stop further degeneration. Patients can visit our page on Dental Fillings to learn more about the procedure.
Root Canal Treatment
Generally, root canal procedures are required when a tooth infection has progressed past the point of getting a cavity filled. This restorative procedure occurs when infection in the tooth has reached the dental pulp and bacteria have killed the tooth’s nerves. The Doctor will begin the treatment by applying a local anesthetic, and will then drill an access hole in the infected tooth. Next, the Doctor will remove all decay from the tooth and file down the interior of the tooth. Finally, he will seal the tooth to protect it from future infection by filling the canal and closing it off with a temporary crown. The procedure itself will only take one visit, but a follow-up visit will be required for the delivery of the permanent crown. For a more in-depth description of the procedure and important after-care tips, patients can visit our Root Canal Therapy page.

Antibiotic Treatment
Occasionally, emergency visits will result in either treatment needing to be scheduled for a later time, or in requiring further at-home treatment. In the case of at-home treatment, often the Doctor will recommend the continued therapy of a tooth infection with antibiotics to ensure the infection is completely eradicated. Additionally, there are rare cases in which patients cannot get same-day treatment, either due to medical reasons or because the required treatment necessitates more time to be reserved. Likewise, in these cases, the doctor will typically prescribe a round of antibiotics so the infection can start to heal even before treatment. It is important for patients to remember that antibiotics are not a full treatment in themselves, but usually a supplement to a more effective procedure performed by the Doctor.

How It Works

Emergency Dental Procedure Costs
The pricing of treatment will depend greatly on the type of treatment required and insurance coverage. Before doing any treatment, we will always inform our patients about the cost. At Hammond Dental, we try our best to give pricing based on what a patient’s specific insurance plan is estimated to cover. However, sometimes insurance companies will either not provide a full breakdown of coverage, or they can deny certain claims after treatment has already been completed. Because of this, we always ask that our insurance patients provide insurance information when setting up an appointment so that we can give the most accurate estimate of the treatment.
For patients who either do not provide insurance until the visit or simply do not know their insurance details, we ask that treatment be paid for in full the day of services, and subsequently, the insurance company would then reimburse the patient directly. Below is a list of out-of-pocket pricing, which does not include potential coverage by insurance. Insurance benefits will vary depending on the patient’s specific plan, so patients should contact their insurance company for exact coverage. We will submit dental insurance claims as a courtesy to our patients.
